Peter Arrell Browne Widener II (1913-1948) was the son of George Dunton Widener and Eleanor Elkins Widener, the grandson of Peter A.B. Widener, and a member of one of the wealthiest families in Philadelphia at the turn of the century.
He grew up in a luxurious mansion on the outskirts of Philadelphia and attended private schools in the area. He studied at Yale University and graduated in 1936.
He then worked in the family business, the Philadelphia Traction Company, which later merged with other companies to form the Philadelphia Rapid Transit Company.
During World War II, Widener served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters.
After the war, Widener became involved in the horse racing industry and built a stable of thoroughbreds. He also invested in a hotel in Maine, where he spent much of his time.
Tragically, Widener died in a plane crash in Maine in 1948 at the age of 35. He was survived by his wife and two young children.
